Career Transitions: Litigation to Mediation

Our panelists and guides are Jeff Kichaven, ’80, and Rich Segal, ’91.  Jeff brings the perspective of a veteran mediator, having transitioned more than two decades ago.  Rich brings the perspective a litigator who more recently made the transition, having left his litigation practice only a few years ago.  The panel will be moderated by Michael Friedland, ’91.


Jeff Kichaven is one of America’s leading mediators.  He is “Ranked in Chambers – Band 1” on the nationwide list, and Lexology (f/k/a) Who’s Who Legal has honored him as a Global Elite Thought Leader in the field.  He is an Elected Member of the American Law Institute, as well as an Honors Graduate of Harvard Law School and a Phi Beta Kappa Graduate of the University of California, Berkeley.  He has been a full-time mediator for 29 years.  His views on mediation have been cited in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.


Richard M. Segal joined ADR Services in 2023.  With a wealth of leadership experience, Mr. Segal has held numerous key positions in his career, including Managing Partner and Litigation Practice Leader of the San Diego offices of Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP. He is a respected member of multiple organizations, including the Association of Business Trial Lawyers and the National Leadership Council of Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, Inc. Mr. Segal has also lent his expertise as a former member of the Boards of Directors of Petco Love, San Diego Youth Services, and the Yale Club of San Diego, and as the Chief Executive Officer of Camp Kesem National, a nationwide nonprofit serving the needs of children facing a parent’s cancer.


Michael Friedland is the co-founding partner of Friedland Cianfrani, an IP boutique in Irvine, California. Mr. Friedland has more than three decades of IP litigation experience, including as a senior partner and former co-chair of Knobbe Martens’ litigation practice group.  Mike has represented clients in more than 300 IP cases in courts nationwide, spanning all areas of IP and a wide variety of industries and technologies. Mike is a former member of the Executive Committee of the nationwide and international Harvard Law School Association, its former Secretary, and a current member of its Senior Advisory Board.
